I was just this morning made aware of the situation in Afghanistan. It truly broke my heart. As I was reading articles about the situation, I came across a story and video about an American military plane that landed on Afghan soil to help with the evacuation. When the plane reached capacity, it prepared to take off. On the outside, though, people so desperate for freedom clung to the hull of the plane, even as it took off down the airstrip. It was so sad.
It got me thinking, though. Jesus, much like the plane, came to bring us freedom and allow us to flee from the bondage of our sinful past. He died and physically left this world, ascending to Heaven on clouds. He will carry us to safety and to eternal life, only if we desperately cling to Him.
Because of this, I wrote a poem about the situation and the Gospel.
Cling to the Plane
The massive plane lands
The ground shakes with joy
Its deep green stands out
Tells the world its here
The people rush in
Trying to touch it
Everyone is scared
They cry to be saved
Engines roar to life
It is time to leave
Humans on the ground
Still yearn for freedom
They keep running in
No time to slow down
They grab for the wings
They lunge at the wheels
The plane takes off now
Their strength increasing
They cling to the plane
Their only resort
The tiny babe wails
The sky shakes with praise
His dark skin blends in
“Tell the world He’s here”
The crowds all rush in
Try to touch His coat
Everyone hurting
They need to be saved
Anger roars to life
It’s His time to die
Humans at his side
Reject His freedom
We need to run in
No time to slow down
I grab for the cross
And pray for His grace
The tomb is empty
Jesus in Heaven
I cling to His name
My only resort!
